Wasgamuwa National Park
was originally declared as strict nature reserve in 1938
and then change to a national park in 1984. The park
lies within central and north- central provinces. The
total park area is 39,322 ha.
Rainfall is mainly by northeast monsoon (December ?
February) and inter-monsoonal rains. Mean annual
rainfall varies from 1750mm in dry zone area to 2250 in
intermediate zone. Mean annual temperature is around
27?C.
Park consists of riverine forest, dry mixed evergreen
forest, grasslands and wetlands. As park is almost
surrounded by Mahaweli & Amban Rivers, riverine forest
area is fairly large.
Wasgamuwa is famous as an elephant habitat. These
elephants are known to be less habituated to people and
are more wildish. Other than elephant, leopard, sloth
bear, sambhur, spotted and barking deer, wild boar and
wild buffalo are also found here. Torque Macaque, Purple
face leaf monkey and nocturnal slender Loris is also
found in the park. Lesser Adjutant, Wooly necked stork,
open bill, painted stork, Racket tailed Drongo, Yellow
fronted barbet, Sri Lanka Junglefowl & Spurfowl are
among the over 100 species of birds found within the
park.
Wasgomuwa NP is famous as an elephant habitat. These
elephants, the population of which is about 150-200 are
known to be less habituated to people and are a wile
rarity. In addition to that 23 species of mammal are to
be found in the park. Other mammal species present
include the sloth bear, leopard golden jackal, water
buffalo, slender Loris, wild boar, spotted deer, braking
deer, sambar, black napped hare and fishing
Of the 428 species of birds reported to be found in Sri
Lanka, 143 species are to be found in this park while 35
species of reptile are also recorded in the park. In
addition, the park is home to, 15 species of amphibians,
17 species of fish and 52 species of butterflies.
In the Wasgamuwa range, almost all the people living in
the adjoining villages of the Wasgamuwa NP are Sinhala
Buddhists.

to get there:
Wasgomuwa can be reached
through Matale and Hettipola or from Dehiattakandiya
coming from Polonnaruwa or from Mahiyangana. To reach
Wasgomuwa National Park it takes six to seven hours by
road from Colombo through Kandy, Matale, Illukkubura,
Knuckells range, Laggala/Pallegama to Wasgamuwa... This
road winds its way through picturesque country, up steep
roads with breathtaking scenery amid a paradise for
photographers. An alternate route which is shorter, lies
through Kandy, Hasalaka along the Minipe Ela to
Wasgamuwa or alternatively the new road from Kandy
through Randenigala, Loggaloya to Minipe and thereafter
to Wasgamuwa.
