HIKKADUWA is a very
popular beach destination just a few hours (98 Km's)
from Colombo on the Southwestern coast of Sri Lanka.
There is an equally varied choice of Beach and Sea for
tourists. Coral for snorkellers, waves for body and
board surfers and a wide strip of sand.
Also a number of Cafes & eateries line the stretch of
the Road in Hikkaduwa if u want to just sit back ,relax
& have a “ bite “feeling the sea breeze.
Hikkaduwa is indeed a modern destination for sun-seekers
and wave worshippers.
t
The city is perfect for
holidays with exciting opportunities to holiday for
weekends. The city is popular for excellent
opportunities for surfing and turtles where one comes
across turtles everywhere in the water. These beautiful
sceneric coral areas can be visited in Hikkaduwa sea
area by glass fitted boats. In this area stones with the
shape of butterfly and other flying insects also can be
found. Around Sri Lanka 183 coral rocks are identified
in the coastal belts. Out of these around 170 can be
found in Hikkaduwa Stone flower garden. Out of this
stone garden 25 are special verities which belong to
only Hikkaduwa area. Unawatuna coral rock is identified
by two names Depadrus and thotatus. It is the only coral
rock identified by two names. These types of corals were
introduced to world by a Portugees aquantic resource
scientist. There are around 200 types of star fish also
living in this area.
The resort area has now
engulfed two or three villages south of it, and is now a
4km strip of hotels, shops, bars, restaurants and
guesthouses. The beaches are nice and wide and swimming
is safe here, though the currents are stronger south of
Hikkaduwa proper. The impressive coral reef runs just
offshore and is still populated by exotic fish and sea
turtles. Glass bottomed boats are available for visitors
wanting to admire the wonders of the deep while keeping
their feet dry!
After a shot distance
southwards from the center of the reef, it diminishes
given rise to a wider sandy bottomed beach with good
waves ideal for board surfing and body surfing. You can
always rent the necessary equipment needed for
snorkeling and surfing. Hikkaduwa is an established
tourist destination and the surfing there is quite well
known. You won't see the Indonesian style overcrowding
here though. The reef is coral so a first aid kit and
booties are handy. Localism is usually not a problem
though we have seen some tourists get some hassle.
Respect them and they leave you alone pretty much.
There are many shops selling Masks, Gems, Jewellery,
Batik, Antiques and etc. along with several Buddhist
temples, all which add spice to life at Hikkaduwa.
Sinigama Devalaya
This devala is
situated on the sea side beyond the 96th km post on the
Colombo-Galle highway. Although the people of the area
consider this temple to be at least 1,300 years old,
there is no evidence to prove this theory. From the
existing historical records and the structural evidence
it is more than 300 years old.
The Devalaya or the shrine
for the god on the shore was constructed very recently.
The god who is known as ‘Devol’ is worshipped at this
shrine. The island itself is extremely small and there
is a deep well, which is supposed to contain fresh
water. This was a part of the mainland when it was first
constructed. Now it is about 500m away from the shore
due to the effects of erosion.
Hikkaduwa
is a heaven for both divers and beach lovers. visit
